Attributing Identity

Oct 01, 2021 - Maximilian Koppernock

The depictions of hairballs within the series Bye Bye Butterfly make us almost painfully aware of the fact that identity is built through the environment. Hairballs placed in different spaces start inhabiting different personas. What was previously an object now moves into subjectivity, or at least so we think. In the pictures those characters are stagnant. Capturing identity in such a blunt and almost satiric way through photography makes us look back at ourselves. We cannot look at the hairballs in the pictures without asking ourselves how much our personhoods are context dependent, how much they move and flow and how we represent them through depictions of ourselves. We see clearly how photography can fix ideas or subvert them, so the question becomes one of agency. How much can we control the way we are seen?
