Every week an artist whose single image was published by Der Greif is given a platform in which to blog about contemporary photography.
Book by Elena Kholkina “Did We Ever Meet?”
Nov 08, 2013 - Tatyana Palyga
Now we meet more and more examples of art projects that deal with photos from different archives, not necessarily the artist's own ones. But today I would really like to introduce you the work by a Moscow photographer Elena Kholkina »Did We Ever Meet?«, which in my opinion represents a very charming way of working with her own photographic archive and mixing it with pictures taken from her friend's archive. Here she tells how she found the idea which formed the book: »I spend a lot of time with my friends and I have many pictures of them. One day I was showing them to a fellow photographer and she said - 'oh, we did the same kind of photos all the time'. So I asked her to show me those photos of her and her friends that they shot during their studies in the 1980s. She brought me her set of green photo albums and I spent some time looking through them. I compared the two archives - hers and mine - and found a large number of very identical photographs. Many of them were just like twins in terms of subject or composition. So, this book is about time lapse and sameness and mirroring lives.« The project turned into a book this summer during a book-making workshop in Latvian International Summer School of Photography (ISSP) under the guidance of a great book designer Teun van der Heijden (Amsterdam). Now Elena's work is at the stage of a book-dummy, and she's still working on the final variant. For now she has a couple of self-published and hand-made copies, please, see the flip-through and some photos of the spreads below. But if in the future you'll have a chance to hold this book in your hands, don't miss it, because it's something very cute and worth touching and looking at.
