Artist Blog

Every week an artist whose single image was published by Der Greif is given a platform in which to blog about contemporary photography.

Being human, I consume and add to the problems of consumption and in turn the burden that civilisation imposes on the earth. In my formative photographic years, I would walk the streets with a camera in search of photographs. Economic desolation and the resulting collateral atrophy became the common threads that ran through the early works, themes, which I am still drawn to.

I don’t think I produced anything memorable back then. There may be one or two images that might still be valid, though without those forgotten days that developed into pathways of understanding process and scrutiny, I doubt I would have gone on to develop my more recent projects.

The photographs here are the type of subjects I would have stopped for back in the early days. Now I’d stop to take those pictures with my phone, much like a sketch in preparation for a more formal piece or body of work. All of these images echo the themes of waste, excess, plastic and obsolescence.
