Nathan Kosta – To See Here

Nov 13, 2020 - Nathan Kosta

To See Here, 2018, captured surveillance video from unsecured Wi-Fi security cameras, total runtime 12 minutes, 2 minute excerpt above.

This film consists entirely of security camera footage captured remotely from unsecured internet-connected security cameras. These cameras were not intended to broadcast publicly, but due to their complexity of operation and lenient manufacturer default settings, are left continuously uploading their footage publicly to the internet. Some of the cameras contain a motorized pan/tilt/zoom mechanism and can be manipulated remotely, some are fixed to a particular field of view. Through this film, I investigate the physical and social position of these automated vision devices and the data they collect within the overall data landscape and in relation to human visual perspective, as well as the conditions of authorship, ownership, and control in regard to the visual data produced and the operation of the cameras.
