Photographic Background

Nov 30, 2022 - Joselito Verschaeve

Before studying photography, I studied Digital Arts and Entertainment, which is animation film and game development. There we had to photograph certain materials and worn-off places to create textures for our 3D models. This is where part of my practice formed. To make the models for this narrative game, we visited our own environment for materials, structures, and scenes that fit the narrative of the game and photographed them.

After that, I enrolled in the Visual Arts Photography Bachelor at KASK (GHENT), and my way of using photography unfolded quickly. I was introduced to photo books, fictional documentaries, etc. and that was when it kinda clicked and I started gravitating towards the photo book as a carrier for my images. In retrospect, game development and the making of photo books have many similarities, from sequencing, storyboarding, pacing, and looking for narrative.

I think I still use this way of Environmental Storytelling in my photographic practice, photographing my day-to-day encounters and local surroundings, with the intention of adding them to these themes and narratives I have in mind.
