Romanzo Meticcio

Aug 01, 2022 - Davide Degano

In “Romanzo Meticcio” I ask myself a simple question:
What does it mean to be Italian?
The project was born from the need to better understand my family’s cultural background. I was born in Sicily and raised in Friuli Venezia Giulia, in the far north.
My maternal grandparents are Colombian and Sicilian, while my paternal ones are of Slovenian origin. These two regions, so poles apart, at the same time share many cultural and historical similarities. Both have always been placed on the sidelines and considered culturally distant from the new nation that was being born with the advent of fascism, but also after its fall, with the birth of the Italian Republic. Pagan and Christian mythology have often come together in my grandparents narratives as stories of hope, faith, and resilience that have always thrilled me and led me, once I grew up, to think about the deeper meaning of those stories and relate them to the development of my persona.
