The Altar

Nov 22, 2021 - Matej Jurcevic

The central piece of the project is an image titled The Altar. In that work I used pages from fashion magazines to create my own altarpiece where the models take roles as Christian iconography. The Altar depicts: heaven, purgatory and hell. The project was made during my stay in Belgium. While I was doing my master studies in photography at KASKA. In my trips around the country I had the opportunity to visit some of the most beautiful churches I ever saw. Altars such as Adoration of the Mystic Lamb by Jan van Eyck served as an inspiration. I wanted to expose the similarities I felt were present between the Chaotic iconography and fashion imagery. The idea of worshiping and subverting to ideals.
