The Nearness of Things

The Nearness of Things

“Distance is only a psychic and ideological construct designed to protect me from the nearness of things”

(Timothy Morton, “Hyperobjects”)

In my most recent, still ongoing body of work I’m approaching the subconscious about its materiality and (un-)availability. I’m looking at manifestations of this hyperobject and am investigating strategies to get in contact with its barely tangible sphere by documenting actual processes like a hypnosis session and staging scenes inspired by these examinations.

Even though there is a documentary character to some of the images, I tried to find abstractions in these moments. I am interested in the point where the distinction between documentation and staging becomes blurry. The results are deconstructed to the extent that meaning is shifted and possible interpretation becomes multifaceted.

Coercion, questions of control and self-optimization are topics that I am touching on in the series as well. The peculiar idea that a person can be measured fascinates me and the subconscious might be something that eludes this attempt.
