Artist Blog

Every week an artist whose single image was published by Der Greif is given a platform in which to blog about contemporary photography.

XYZ Books

Jan 20, 2015 - Tiago Casanova

It has been a challenging week, so for my last post I would like to share something else: my growing love for photobooks. In the summer of 2013 I started a project with my dear friend and photographer Pedro Guimarães - the XYZ Bookshop in Lisbon, and later the photographer Valter Vinagre joined the team. Our small bookshop was also my first architectural project, which gave me great pleasure to design and build, but recently we found this place too small for our goals and our growing team. We are now moving to a new and much bigger location, joining forces with Our Company - Design Team, creating together the new project - A ILHA, with an exhibition space, Print and Scan Lab, Bookshop, Artist Studios, Workshops and many more things planned to happen. I also share some images of our first and only Photobook until the moment - Pearl, a project and book about Madeira Island, nicknamed as “The Pearl of the Atlantic”, a highly touristic place known for its Nature and its unique Laurisilva Forests. Madeira suffered countless transformations on its landscapes since its discovery on the XV century, being this project an analogy on how a pearl is created: a natural defensive reaction to external objects, in this case, introduced by Man. I was intrigued by this phenomenon of natural transformation of a living being through the creation of a non-living hard object, that turns out to be a very rare and valuable object, referenced as an example of beauty. This book is about this relation between the subjective senses of beauty and uglyness and how the line between both senses is so thin and insignificant, working on this specific place, the Pearl of the Atlantic. I hope you have enjoyed my destructive posts. A special thank you to Der Greif and also to Simon Rimaz and Andrea Botto for sharing their projects.
