Alexis Vasilikos - A Sense of Space

Jul 21, 2021

The first 3 images of this small selection come from the series “A Sense of Space”
which I started making around three years ago, it is a work that arose from searching in my archive for images that represent or transmit a sense of space. The rest of the images of this selection come from various series that revolves around space and abstraction.
I don’t know how or why exactly I started to focus on space but it seems
that it is one of the main themes of my work over the last years.
I think that there is a variety of reasons for this attraction, such as my love for minimalism, ambient music, and spirituality among other things.
The fact that space has a dual significance is very important in my understanding because it is at the same time elemental and mental, both inner and outer. Space is often used in scriptures as a metaphor for the Self or the essence of the mind.
In the words of Eckhart Tolle:
Space Consciousness represents not only freedom from ego,
but also from dependency on the things of this world, from materialism
and materiality. It is the spiritual dimension that alone can
give transcendent and true meaning to this world.
