Ellen Bahr - Out of Order Out of Control

Jun 02, 2018

What happens when control is the dominant force in image making, and what happens when it is relinquished in favor of letting go? In this series, I explore the poles of order and disorder, their mental and material dimensions, and the role they can play in photography. Order is a comfortable place for me, soothing and sustaining; disorder and a lack of control have their attractions, but I find my way to them with more difficulty. My process for creating images is very open-ended — I begin with some raw materials (often mirrors, acrylic, foam core), which I manipulate, finding the composition as I go along. Improvisation plays an important role. This series began with very formal compositions – straight lines, right angles, tightly controlled arrangements. As time went on, I tried to break free of my tendency to restrain, to see what would happen if I allowed things to get messy and fall apart. I feel that the images work best when they are both meticulous and slightly flawed, in the sense that they reveal the material reality behind the images and spontaneous nature of my approach.
