Marie Haefner - working on shame

Aug 24, 2022

‘working on shame’’ was born out of a collaboration with Berlin based fashion designer Kaja Busch. Kaja’s collection speaks about shame in a social and bodily context. Legible symbols of shame were used in the design in order to empower both wearer and viewer. Inspiration was drawn from literature on social class change (such as Annie Ernaux, Didier Eribon and Edouard Louis) as well as conducted interviews about personal experiences of shame and the connection between shame and clothing. The photographic series then intended to emphasize gestures in the context of shame and how we can be empowered through them. Visually I was strongly influenced by Rineke Dijkstra’s Beach Portraits and the way her subjects are portrayed through the poses they take.
