Matej Jurčević - I get so lonely, life in magazines

I get so lonely, life in magazines
project by Matej Jurčević

I get so lonely, life in magazines is a revision of my adolescence, a time when fashion publications became my form of escapism from teenage angst. From one page to another magazines became landscapes full of characters and places that occupied my imagination. Now, I am looking back at that strange and lonely period of growing up; teenage years.

I cut pages out of fashion magazines, choosing intuitively the ones that are reminiscent of my teen-hood. Then I build a real-life collage in my living space, in this process the imagery once again occupies my life. This time instead of existing in my mind images exist in my space. That shift symbolizes a change; images are no longer my fantasies but rather objects I am using to expose an existing relationship.

Some collages were installed for days, others took down right away, depending on how long it took me to get the photograph. It was rearranged and moved depending on how it affected everyday tasks around the apartment. The installations were in a way alive and they became part of my life for a moment. That coexistence is the essence of the project.

The title of the project is a quotation from a lyric by the artist Sophie. She has tragically passed away earlier this year. The day before her passing I cut out an image of her from i-D and put it aside to work on later, the next day the news of her tragic passing woke me up; I get so lonely, life in magazines. She has left an indelible mark on my life using her lyric as a title is a full-hearted thank you to her genius.
