Roger Ballen - Asylum of the Birds

May 21, 2014

»Asylum of the Birds« is the much-awaited new monograph from Roger Ballen, one of the most revered and original image-makers of today. This new body of work extends the artistic trajectory charted across Roger Ballen’s three previous books – Outland, Shadow Chamber, and Boarding House. The black-and-white images featured in Asylum of the Birds were photographed within the confines of a house in a Johannesburg suburb, the location of which remains a mystery. The inhabitants of the house, both people and animals, and most notably, the ever-present birds, are the cast who perform within a sculptural and decorated theatrical interior that Roger Ballen creates and orchestrates. The resulting images are compelling and dynamic, existing in a space between painting, drawing, installation, and photography. Richly layered with graffiti, drawings, animals, and found objects, they are timeless, psychologically powerful, and masterfully composed. In a world in which photographers seek to avoid definition, Roger Ballen’s photographs defy classification and genres: his world stands out as one of a kind.

For more than 30 years my prints have always been done in the darkroom, another major shift in photography. This recent article gives a great overview of a trajectory of my work.

Exhibition-Installations

May 24, 2014 - Roger Ballen

Over the past few years I have produced installations with my exhibitions. This has allowed the viewer to enter spaces that replicate the places that I continue to work in. By being in these spaces, the viewer can more easily identify with my aesthetic. You can view some of these installations on my website at www.rogerballen.com under installations. The above images are from the current show at Fotografiska in Stockholm. rogerballen.com/installations fotografiska.eu

Asylum of the birds – the video

May 23, 2014 - Roger Ballen

frame src="//www.youtube.com/embed/Mv-E6S51VCo" width="1000" height="563" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"> I am very pleased to be able to produce a video in conjunction with the launch of my book Asylum of the Birds. I felt that the two artworks complimented each other and expanded the aesthetics of my art. A challenge for the viewer – not only in the video but also in the photos is to decipher what fundamentally is a product of Roger Ballen’s consciousness vs. what is in the so called real world. www.asylumofthebirds.com
